Indian ethnic wear sizes differently from Western high-street clothing, and that’s the number one worry we hear from UK and US customers. This guide explains how our sizing works, how to measure yourself properly, and which options remove the guesswork entirely.

How Indian kurta sizing works

Indian kurta sizes are led by the bust measurement in inches: a “size 38” kurta is cut for a 38-inch bust with wearing ease added on top. Our pieces are labelled either with these numeric sizes (36–46) or with letter sizes (XS–XXXL).

Important: this table is a starting point, not a promise. Hand-finished garments vary piece to piece — always check the size chart on the individual product page where one is shown, and when in doubt, message us before ordering.

The most reliable trick: measure a kurta you already own

Better than any conversion chart: take a kurta or tunic that fits you well, lay it flat, and measure across the bust (underarm to underarm, then double it) and the length. Compare those numbers to the product’s measurements. Two minutes with a tape measure prevents almost every sizing return.

Remember kurtas are meant to be relaxed

A traditional kurta isn’t cut like a fitted Western dress — it’s designed with ease through the body. If you’re between sizes and prefer the classic drape, size up; if you like a closer, more contemporary line (our slim-fit long kurtas, for example), stay true to size.

When to skip sizing altogether

Two options remove size risk completely. Free-size pieces — most of our dupattas, several palazzos and relaxed kurtis — are cut to fit a wide range. And unstitched suit sets are the traditional answer: you receive the hand-embroidered fabric and have it tailored to your exact measurements, at home or by any local tailor. For occasion wear, made-to-measure beats any size chart.
